The Slog Smugglers by George Barker

This is an outstanding book by George recalling his schooldays as a boarder in the 1950's. It is in places very funny, and is one of those books that you will find impossible to put down. Brought back a lot of memories for me, even though I started the term after George left. Many black and white silhouette illustrations. Two maps. One plan. 225 pp.

If you haven't already read it, you really should.

Crazy Buildings by George Barker

A school inspector's report of 1867 says of the Grammar School that it occupied "A crazy wooden building which had been kept from falling down by well-timed repairs." This book by George charts how it not only survived but added adjoining buidlings whichw ere never designed to be part of a school. A very apt title.

Nudes at Breakfast by George Barker

An account of Steyning Grammar School during the Second World War. Before you ask, "Nudes" refer to slogs (thickly sliced bread served at tea-time) without margarine, which was often in short supply during the war due to rationing. A fascinating story of an age before health and safety in sometimes difficult circumstances.

Making a Mark by George Barker

There was a long-standing tradition of carving (or scratching) names on pews in Steyning Church. Scurrilous of course, but most of us did it. The marks are still there and this book explains on which pews, and gives a short biography of each culprit.

Old Boys Tie

A few years ago Michael Phillips had the Old Boys Tie replicated at his own expense, but with a modem length and width, and offered it for sale. Michael died on 24 March 2006, and until stocks ran out his wife kindly offered to handle any sales. That stock has now run out, and George Barker has had another batch of ties made up to the same design. There were only six left last time I checked.
